55-year-old Sitges resident dies after going into sea to help others on Sant Joan night

The Sant Joan celebrations ended with a tragic event in Sitges: the death of a 55-year-old man, a Sitges local resident, due to cardiac arrest, when he was in the sea at La Ribera beach. The beach was full of people celebrating at the time.

The man had jumped into the sea along with others to try to help a group of individuals who could not get out of the water, as confirmed by the Mossos d’Esquadra to the Europa Press news agency.

The events happened around 1am, when a group of bathers who were in the sea found themselves in difficulty. People who were on the beach gave the warning and three lifeguards who were in the area and who were off duty jumped in to help them.

They rescued a girl from the sea, who had ingested a lot of sea water and who was transferred to the Hospital de Sant Camil, in a minor condition. They also pulled out the 55-year-old man in a critical condition, and who had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Firefighters, EMS, Local Police and Mossos d’Esquadra immediately arrived, deploying a team to try and resuscitate the man. Applying the DEA during 30 minutes, they tried in vain to save the man. The Local Police contacted the victim’s family and the EMS activated a psychological support service.

The police and medical teams also contacted Salvament Marítim to ensure there was no one else in the sea.

The Sant Joan night also saw a fire in the early hours of the morning in an area of the Club de Mar, where the surfboards are kept. The fire was put out by beach workers with buckets of water, although a fire engine was also dispatched.

Shortly before and just a few metres away, some youths set fire to a rubbish container. An alert from a neighbour enabled the Local Police to catch the main perpetrator, together with three other companions. The fire was also extinguished by the fire brigade.

Alcohol controls carried out by the police resulted in four reported cases, one of a serious nature. A check carried out at the station also saw five people in possession of drugs.
